Not everyone knows or understands what Search Engine Optimization is all about. Honestly, I knew nothing about it, until I was recruited to the company I am with currently. For those who don’t know, in brief, Search Engine Optimization pertains to creating and shaping a website which can be found on search engines by consumers/general public. SEO is an important strategic methodology, especially when it comes to marketing a company in a high tech and connected world. What good would a website be to a company, if a company’s site can’t be found in the search engines? SEO is a fairly young and thriving industry, constantly evolving to the needs of busy consumers.

Within the SEO industry, there are other sub-categories. The type of SEO I described above is more geared towards e-commerce sites. An e-commerce site can rank on search engines for different keywords, which would in turn expand the sites efficiency in being found by consumers on the main search engines like: Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL. (Each search engine has different ways in crawling sites and ranking importance for querries, but there are basic ways to efficiently SEO an e-commerce site. I only know this by my own experience of seeing how each ranks sites by the same query.)

SEO is also important for individuals and corporations when it comes to brand and reputation management. Potential investors in a business need to feel secure in where their money will be going. An expanding corporation needs to actively and effectively manage their brand and reputation. A passive stance is detrimental on many levels. Their sales and stock values can decline. Potential investors will not feel secure in a company’s direction, thus steering investors away from can be perceived as a mismanaged corporation.

SEO is definitely a necessity in modern day marketing. I’m fortunate to be learning from some great people. I’ll be writing more on the topic of SEO on my blog. So, until next time! S-E-O, let’s go! Get optimized, or get left in the dark ages!
